The architectural and artistic life of Kazan in the late 1960s – 1980s: searches for expressive imagery and national uniqueness in the architecture of city’s public buildings

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

The article discusses how the activation of architectural and artistic life influenced the emergence of various trends and directions in the search for figurative-plastic expressiveness and national identity in the architecture of public buildings in Kazan in the late 1960s through 1980s. The study shows that the expressiveness of architectural forms was achieved in two ways: the first was the interpretation of stereotyped forms using unified details and synthesis of arts; the second involved the creation of completely different forms based on a new understanding of the plasticity of architecture and vision of traditions, and evolving ideas about architectural and spatial composition and synthesis of the arts. In the search for national identity in the late 1960s - 1980s, the following directions can be distinguished: regional, national-romantic, structural-plastic, and complex environment development.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOVIET MODERNISM IN THE ARCHITECTURE OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS OF KAZAN IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 1950s – 1960s

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (78) June, 2022

The article considers the restructuring and evolvement of the plastic and figurative language of architecture in the context of the transition to construction industrialization and standardization in the mid-1950s-late 1960s using the example of public buildings in Kazan. Thanks to such buildings as the Kazan Circus and the Public Center of the Volga International Camp, Kazan architecture rose to world level in the 1960s. The search for the national identity of Kazan in that period was based on the country’s commonly adopted theoretical concepts of the national and the international, the new and the traditional, and laid the foundation for the regional direction of local national-identity concepts.
