SPACE SYNTAX METHODOLOGY IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE RECONSTRUCTION (LONDON, GREAT BRITAIN)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (78) June, 2022

The Trafalgar Square reconstruction, developed with the participation of Norman Foster + Partners as part of the World Squares for All project, is an example of successful space syntax application. Observations of pedestrian behavior patterns conducted in the area allowed the space syntax method to be tested on empirical data. Comparison of observation data with data obtained by analysis with spatial syntax tools showed a high degree of correspondence. Furthermore, an analysis of the current situation revealed several problems in the use of the area. The results of the observations and calculations enabled design proposal to be developed for the Trafalgar Square spatial organization and its adjacent territories. The design proposal developed by an interdisciplinary team of specialists has transformed an underutilized area into a popular public space.
