Evolvement of the spatial planning structure of the historic settlement of Kargopol

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

Kargopol is a historic city on the left bank of the Onega River in the Arkhangelsk region. The first mention of Kargopol in written sources dates back to 1380. The town was founded in 1447. In 2002, Kargopol was granted the status of a historic settlement of federal significance.
Kargopol has preserved some elements of the old Russian city, the layout from the second half of the 18th century, the 16th-19th century stone cathedrals, and a significant part of the wooden buildings constructed in the late 19th–early 20th century.
It is currently important to analyze how the spatial planning structure of Kargopol has evolved to ensure the sustainable development of the city, which is an important element of the Russian tourism routes, including the "Silver Necklace".
The evolution of Kargopol’s spatial planning structure has been reviewed from the 11th century to the present time. The urban environment landmarks dating back to the 11th–18th century and 18th–19th century and their dominants have been identified, and the main features of the city’s planning structure established.
The results of the study can be used as the basis for projects of spatial development taking into account the conservation of historic landmarks and historic visual axes of the city. This study can contribute to timely interventions to determine a development strategy for the city of Kargopol.

ARCHITECTURAL AND SPATIAL ORGANIZATION OF A SINGLE COMPLEX OF STATIONS OF THE VOLOGDA-ARKHANGELSK RAILWAY IN THE LATE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (79) September, 2022

This article is based on the results of a comprehensive study involving the architectural complex of the 600 km Vologda-Arkhangelsk line, Northern Railway, carried out for the first time covering all of its 19 stations. The study covered the history of the station complex in the period of 1894-1900s designed by the architect Lev Kekushev together with I.A. Ivanov-Shitz, which was constructed simultaneously with the railway under the leadership of S.I. Mamontov. The composition and arrangement of the stations along the railway were examined along with their typological composition, and planning, spatial and stylistic characteristics, which determine uniform perception of the entire complex of stations. The main features and development principles of the railway’s architectural complex were established at various urban planning levels - from the location of the stations along the railway to the architectural and spatial treatment of the stations themselves.
