The article explores the process of developing the functional planning structure of animal shelters. The current principal modern trends in the design of shelters for homeless animals are reviewed. Comparison of shelters in Russia, USA, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK enabled a number of common features in space planning to be identified. The study suggests defining principles for functional, architectural and spatial planning of animal shelters that lay a groundwork for developing modern shelters for homeless animals as a new typological object
