An approach to multidimensional urban planning classification of region’s urbanized landscape

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026

The regional settlement system is developing under the influence of various processes related to the emergence and expansion of urban and rural settlements. The increasing density of spatial connections, diversification of production, and improvement of living conditions lead to the formation of an urbanized landscape that combines both rural and urban forms of planning. Trends in urban zoning create a variety of approaches to universal regulation and control of land development and construction, all of which are equally distant from the essence and problems of urbanized landscape. The outcome of formalized urban planning activities is fragmented (focal) populated areas, which contrast with the balanced and promising development of large urban planning systems. In this regard, the study proposes an approach to describing urbanized landscape, which results in a multidimensional classification of its territories.

A methodology for determining the city's urban space population

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (82) June, 2023

The article proposes a methodology for estimating population numbers based on data available from public information sources using an algorithm for processing and calculating geo-information remote sensing data, urban zoning, and demographic quantitative characteristics of the territory. The methodology provides detailed and accurate results. It is instrumental in conducting interdisciplinary studies in urbanized territories and serves as a basis for assessing the spatial and socio-economic development of urban and metropolitan areas.

A METHOD FOR DEFINING THE BOUNDARIES OF URBAN AND METROPOLITAN AREAS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (80) December, 2022

A method is proposed for defining the boundaries of urban systems and metropolitan areas based on urban development processes, such as transport accessibility, degree of anthropogenic impact, and spatial connectivity. Assessment of spatial development aspects makes it possible to establish the outer boundary of an agglomeration, reflecting the structure of the urbanized area. In urban systems, the zone of actual influence produced by the city’s central area on the suburbs and other urban objects is defined allowing for the existing administrative zoning. The results of the study may be used for improving the methodological framework of urban planning and balanced decision making.
