Military theme in the cultural landscape of Khabarovsk. 1864-2025

The article presents the interim results of the study conducted within the framework of the grant of the Russian Science Foundation on "Military Theme in the Architectural and Spatial Development of the Far East". The influence of the Military Department on the formation of the urban development structure of Khabarovsk (1864-1914) is considered; Three different layers are identified in the architecture of the military and security agencies that determined the appearance of the city’s historical central area. The main part of the article is devoted to the Khabarovsk "Framework of Memory", filled with memorial objects and spaces. A conclusion is made about the importance of the historical patriotic context formed as a result of the combined manifestation of the military theme on urban planning, architectural and symbolic levels.

Barracks and fortresses. A comparative review of the military architecture of Hungary and the Russian Far East

The article, written within the framework of the Russian-Hungarian project “The Architectural Image of the Motherland: Budapest-Petersburg-Harbin”, is devoted to the architecture of fortifications and garrisons. In the first, Hungarian, part, the role of fortress architecture in the formation of national identity and (using two examples) the architecture of barracks are reviewed. The main goal of the second, Far Eastern Turkestan, part is to identify the role of garrison towns as a “civilization matrix” that transmits the culture of the metropolis to the outskirts of the empire. In the third part, the topic of fortresses and military settlements is addressed using the example of Port Arthur and the project of “soldiers’ settlements” along the Chinese Eastern Railway.
