Assessment of the location and typology of the reference center of the Novosibirsk agglomeration in the context of its spatial development
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026
The Novosibirsk agglomeration, one of the largest in Russia, has been studied comprehensively within the chronological period from the 1950s to the present time using the method of criteria for assessing settlement systems within these chronological boundaries. The main objective is to identify the features and problems of Novosibirsk agglomeration development and assess prospects for its sustainable development. Special attention is paid to the history of the agglomeration, changes in its composition and socio-economic relations between settlements. Cartographic, temporal and urban planning analyses were carried out. This part of the study examines the first three criteria of the method chosen: location in the agglomeration structure, the typology of the reference center, and the number of settlements. The study revealed a number of problems in the region, such as population migration, high mortality rate, and abandonment of settlements. The systematization of information with a comprehensive analysis of the agglomeration in the historical context should allow adapting effective methods of agglomeration development and ensuring sustainable development of sparsely populated areas. The results of the study can be useful for elaborating an agglomeration development strategy and optimizing urbanization processes in the country. This study is structured into 3 sections, each of which is dedicated to solving specific tasks defined in this part. The content of the articles in each section is a logical continuation of the previous section.
