Architectural typology from the point of view of crime prevention

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (92) December, 2025

The structure of an architectural object is studied from the perspective of its penetrability and surveillance, and protection against crime, in particular crime provoked by the urbanized environment. More specifically, protection from crime is considered in the context of architecture and typological features that influence it. The shortcomings of existing typological approaches are reviewed, and security issues in stylistic, functional and structural typologies are described. Among other things, new principles of architectural type determination are proposed: penetrability, surveillance, and adaptability to arising criminogenic threats. In addition, modern security strategies are overviewed, and latest works in the field of architectural typology and the theory of crime prevention by means of architecture and spatial design are analyzed. Suggestions are made about key directions of architectural typology development taking into account the requirements of security and protection from crime.

Analysis of building circulation spaces for anti-terrorist security

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (89) March, 2024

The paper examines the principles underlying the design of the recreational and communication framework in public buildings and methods of ensuring its protection and anti-terrorist security. The requirements of the regulatory literature and guidelines for the protection of buildings and structures from terrorist attacks are briefly considered. Using individual examples, the basic principles of arranging a hierarchical structure of building spaces in terms of their protection are considered, options for zoning and dividing by access levels are presented, along with a description of techniques for protecting the nodal, most important points: entrances and main distribution spaces. The main architectural elements of the circulation framework that affect its protection from potential criminal encroachments are identified and classified. The author concludes that the spatial planning of the building's circulation framework and its vertical and horizontal connections is of prime importance in terms of safety and security.
