Letterform modifying techniques in English inclusive fonts

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (90) June, 2025

The article analyses methods for increasing the legibility of characters in fonts for people with visual impairments and dyslexia. Letterform modification is typical for inclusive fonts, as it allows adding extra distinctive features to letters and thereby increasing their recognition. However, researchers have so far mainly focused on studying how font typeface parameters help reduce errors. This study focuses on the design features of characters. A systematization of difficult-to-recognize letters and an analysis of their graphic solution is suggested, which has made it possible to identify the main techniques of form-building in inclusive fonts: adding single serifs and increasing their width; enlarging ascenders; changing the proportions or inclination of arcuate elements; and using open apertures. Differentiation of characters was mainly realized through accentuation of terminal elements, which indicates its key role in the legibility of characters.
