Architectural approaches to actualizing the format of geriatric centers

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026

Globally, there is a need to create healthcare programs to support the elderly population, and it is essential to reform existing institutions of this kind. This article examines the phenomenon of "urban co-location" as a conceptual source for updating the formats of geriatric social and medical centers (SMCs) offering assisted living. Examples from global experience and current trends in geriatric center organization are analyzed, and models and structural diagrams of such complexes are summarized. Promising SMC formats are substantiated, their architectural program and universal composition of components are presented, and significant parameters for the architectural design of geriatric centers are summarized.

Spatial and environmental approaches in organizing and adapting living space for people with dementia

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (92) December, 2025

The article considers approaches to the organization of living space (wards) for tenants in a geriatric center and suggests recommendations for adapting the living space in case of home care. Key architectural and planning strategies of ward design are summarized: spatial orientation, zoning, required floor area and zone configurations, ward typology, and balance of the components. For each specific zone within the ward, environmental and design tactics of adaptation for use by people with geriatric syndromes are proposed. These are applicable to both home environment adaptation and institutional ward design.
