The exhibition design of Rudolf Kliks at Soviet international exhibitions (1960–1970s)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026

This article attempts to identify the main techniques characteristic of the work of Rudolf Kliks, a Soviet exhibition designer who had so far remained outside the attention of researchers. The study examines the spatial design of Soviet exhibitions, identifies key features of Kliks’ exhibition directing (within the social history of art), and analyzes how exhibits and their environments operated as tools of political propaganda through cultural-historical methods.
The main results of the work are a reconstruction of Kliks' creative biography on the basis of archival documents and articles in periodicals, as well as analysis of Kliks’ exhibition practice, marked by staged spatial effects, dynamic visual composition, unregulated viewer movement, and the use of contemporary audiovisual media. Using evidence from Kliks’ spatial and exhibition practices, the paper also presents general trends in the design of the Soviet modernist era.
