"Woven city": from architectural utopia to experimental settlement

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (93) March, 2026

This article presents the "Woven City" concept as a practical utopia – a projective ideal for a sustainable low-rise settlement supported by specific architectural and planning solutions and design validation.
The planning structure of the settlement presents a "carpet weave" and is based on the principles of traditional ornament of the peoples of Russia. A typology of residential buildings has been developed using ecological materials and integrating renewable energy sources. Solutions for craft clusters and autonomous engineering infrastructure are proposed.
Design validation of the principles was carried out on the example of the eco-settlement "Aikhov" in the Republic of Mordovia (19.5 hectares, 24 houses). A distinctive feature of the project is the preservation of bio-corridors for wild fauna by placing houses on elevated supports.
