Additive architecture: a strategy for the flexible renewal of the existing urban environment

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (94) June, 2026

The role of additive architecture as a strategy for the sustainable renewal and development of the urban environment is defined. This approach enables the transformation of buildings without demolition or destruction of the existing structure while preserving partial or full structural and cultural integrity. The article formulates a typology of additive interventions, analyses the principles of functional flexibility, and identifies the advantages and limitations of this method. Particular attention is paid to the relevance of the approach within the context of Kazan, where the mismatch between outdated spaces and modern requirements reinforces the need for flexible architectural solutions.
