The ecological code of graffiti in the urban environment structure
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (95) September, 2026
The phenomenon of ecological graffiti has been studied as a form of urban environment design that transforms the protest potential of street art into the practice of ecological education. The focus is on the semiotic transformation of graffiti statements that carry an ecological message. Based on the analysis of recent Russian and foreign cases, the article reconstructs the mechanism of graffiti transition from the "countercultural" to the "mainstream" and then to the "ecological-educational" code. The key characteristics of the new semiotic register are identified: a change in the addressee and modality of the statement, as well as the preservation of the protest potential during its reorientation. The concept of "ecological-semiotic code of graffiti" is introduced as a tool for its identification and classification in the system of environmental design. It is concluded that eco-graffiti is becoming a legitimate and effective tool for participatory design, contributing to the formation of the city's residents' ecological identity and offering alternative solutions.
