"GEOGRAPHIC" DESIGN. THE BIRTH OF NAVIGATING SYSTEMS

The article considers some aspects of the origin of navigation: the emergence of the first primitive environmental reference points and petroglyphs in the prehistoric period. The author demonstrates transformations in "geographic" design from large-scale complex navigating systems of the Bronze Age, improvised navigation instruments of the Creto-Mycenaean culture to antique prototypes of modern road traffic signs. A series of historical examples is used to draw parallels between the discoveries of the ancient civilizations and data carriers which are still relevant today.
