Evolution of the Republic Burundi's residential housing during the pre-colonial, colonial and independence periods

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (95) September, 2026

The history of houses in Burundi has its roots in the distant past. From colonization to the current day, the residential fund of the Republic of Burundi has changed a lot, because at first, houses were small, round, and rectangular, with tiny rooms, and sometimes even without a kitchen, but over time, these issues were resolved, even if people weren't totally satisfied. For this reason, this article analyzes and examines the different types of houses in Burundi and their functional zoning for the various periods that Burundi has undergone in the process of developing its residential fund. Based on the results of this study, suggestions, and recommendations are formulated in the field of urban planning and socio-economic development to solve the identified problems, considering the type of houses that need to be adapted as part of the sustainable development of different cities in Burundi
