Theoretical aspects of research on national architectural and spatial identity of cities

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (95) September, 2026

The article examines the theoretical background of the formation and manifestation of a city's national architectural and spatial identity. National identity is defined as a dynamic, multidimensional, and multilevel socio-cultural phenomenon that manifests itself in the city's architectural and landscape organization, as well as in its architectural and symbolic forms. A review of research on architectural and cultural identity reveals its multifaceted significance, encompassing practical, social, semiotic, and aesthetic functions. We describe the process of how the national identity is realized, involving the conscious transfer and adaptation of traditional architectural and spatial forms to create a distinctive architectural environment and strengthen social and cultural cohesion. The integration of national and cultural codes into the contemporary architectural and spatial environment ensures its continuous and, therefore, sustainable development.
