Book design for cross-cultural localization: a case study of a translated edition

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (95) September, 2026

This article examines specific aspects encountered in the visual localization of translated books that have not previously been published on the Russian market. Using Martin Huxley’s biography “Nine Inch Nails: Self-Destruct” as a case study, we analyze the complex process of adapting the original’s graphic elements, layout, cover design, and typography to the socio-cultural and technical realities of the domestic publishing industry and identify key challenges arising during the graphic adaptation of the translation—specifically, the discrepancies in geometric and visual parameters between the Cyrillic and Latin versions of the Impact and Courier New typefaces. Practical strategies are suggested for overcoming "visual noise" while preserving the publication's original aesthetic (characterized by "industrial" style and "radio interference" effects) through the use of modern software (Adobe InDesign) and artificial intelligence tools. The practical significance of the research lies in the development of a localization workflow that successfully combines the verbal accuracy of the translation with the visual and graphic integrity of the layout.
