Art nouveau by Sergei Vincent. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Harbin

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

The article reflects the interim results of a study conducted under the grant of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research “Architectural Image of the Motherland: Budapest, St. Petersburg, Harbin. European and national (local) aspects in Russian and Hungarian architecture - a comparative study of the turn of the 19th - early 20th centuries.” Using as an example the work of Sergei Alexandrovich Vincent, a well-known Far Eastern architect, civil engineer, public figure, graduate of the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers, we consider the evolution of the Art Nouveau style in the architecture of the Eastern outskirts of the Russian Empire. A brief biographical sketch outlines the educational background of S.A. Vincent and main landmarks in his creative and professional path. The architect’s projects realized in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Harbin are reviewed. The Art Nouveau style in the master's work is shown to transform from rationality in the first buildings to more expressive and oriental stylistics in later works. The article celebrates the contribution of the architect to the development of the region’s architecture and railway infrastructure during its initial development is highlighted, and the importance of S.A. Vincent’s professional activities on the development of Harbin during the emigration period.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE RUSSO-CHINESE BANK’S BUILDINGS IN DALIAN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (75) September, 2021

The article reflects the results of the research work conducted by the authors within the framework of the scientific project: "Architecture of Banking and Consular Institutions in Manchuria in the Late 19th - Early 20th Century." In a brief historical essay, we outline the reasons for the creation of the Russo-Chinese Bank and its activities in the northeast of China. Photographs and archival materials are used to appreciate the preserved and lost buildings of the bank’s branches in Dalian (Port Arthur and Dalny), as well as two unrealized projects drawn up by the German architect G.Yu. Junghendel at the beginning of the 20th century. The study identifies the stylistic and spatial planning features of the Russo-Chinese Bank’s buildings and their place in the general architectural landscape of the Kwantung Peninsula during the period when this territory was in Russian possession.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF BANKING INSTITUTIONS IN KHARBIN IN THE FIRST THIRD OF THE 20th CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (71) September, 2020

The article is devoted to the architecture of Harbin's banking institutions built from 1898 to the mid-1930s. We briefly review the city’s urban planning landscape and the emergence of the banking system in northeast China, which largely determined the architecture of objects of this type and their localization in the urban structure of Harbin. The spatial layout and stylistic features of the bank buildings built in the New Town and Pier districts and in Harbin’s satellite town of Fujadian are examined. The importance of these objects for the development of the city's main streets is emphasized.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF BANKING INSTITUTIONS IN TIANJIN DURING THE PERIOD OF EUROPEAN CONCESSIONS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (60) December, 2017

The article is devoted to the architecture of banking institutions in Tianjin. A compositional and stylistic analysis has been carried out, and an iconographic description of the buildings of the main banks located within the boundaries of the former European concessions is provided. The influence of their spatial and decorative solutions on the city planning ensemble is considered based on the example of North Jiefang Road located in Heping district. This short review has revealed the main principles of colonial structure form generation during that period: the prevalence of eclecticism which is based on Victorian and, partly, Edwardian architecture; violation of the European architectural canons and use of motives from classical Chinese architecture.
