PORTUGUESE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM POMBALINO OR LEARNING FROM RUINS

This paper presents the main features of the Portuguese constructive system Pombalino. The constructive system, named after its founder, Marquis de Pombal, is an example of the first conscious anti-seismic measures applied in architecture and construction. It was formed on the basis of a deep scientific analysis of the consequences of the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755 and deserves attention and detailed study.
Based on Pombal's analytical work on the effects of the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755, necessary and sufficient conditions for preserving the stability of the architectural object have been determined. The main structural elements of the Pombalino system are described in the article. In addition, a typical Pombalino building is represented, the specifics of the work of this constructive system in solving seismic protection problems in urban planning are determined.
