The architecture of Hungarian schools as a tool for forming the national identity. 1909-1927

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (85) March, 2024

School architecture in Hungary is seen as an important tool in the formation of this young nation. The Hungarian school was called upon to educate a “new citizen” and a “good Hungarian”, forming in children the image of their beloved Motherland. The history of rural and metropolitan school construction in Hungary at the beginning of the 20th century is briefly overviewed. The little-known Hungarian experience of implementing large-scale state school construction programs, carried out with the involvement of the best architects, is interesting as a background against which the peculiarities of the Russian school architecture at the turn of the century stands out more clearly.

Barracks and fortresses. A comparative review of the military architecture of Hungary and the Russian Far East

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (84) December, 2023

The article, written within the framework of the Russian-Hungarian project “The Architectural Image of the Motherland: Budapest-Petersburg-Harbin”, is devoted to the architecture of fortifications and garrisons. In the first, Hungarian, part, the role of fortress architecture in the formation of national identity and (using two examples) the architecture of barracks are reviewed. The main goal of the second, Far Eastern Turkestan, part is to identify the role of garrison towns as a “civilization matrix” that transmits the culture of the metropolis to the outskirts of the empire. In the third part, the topic of fortresses and military settlements is addressed using the example of Port Arthur and the project of “soldiers’ settlements” along the Chinese Eastern Railway.

New sources for studying far eastern modernism. 1925-1940s

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

The aim of the article is to introduce little-known sources that can help reconstruct the cultural landscape of Manchuria during the Interbellum period. A review of publications from the 1925-1940s provides an insight into how modernism penetrated into the culture of Japan and Manchukuo. The first part of the article is devoted to Bruno Taut's stay in Japan, and the second part shows examples of Manchu post-constructivism. It is concluded that cultural transfers to the Far East proceeded via two ways: from Germany through Russia to Japan and China, and from the United States to Japan and on to Manchuria. Architecture is interpreted as a "soft power," which subtly forms a loyal attitude toward the recipient country.

Workers' colonies and garden cities. The hungarian experience (1900-1925)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (81) March, 2023

The article is written by a Russian-Hungarian team. The first part deals with the French experience of organizing workers' colonies (1851-1900s); the second part, with the first and the best example of the Hungarian garden city of Vecerlelep (a suburb of Budapest, 1908-1930s). This location is little known to the domestic reader; however, in the 1920s, Vekerlelep was considered as a world-class model for the implementation of the garden-city concept. The final part addresses the problem of the interpretation of the garden-city concept by domestic researchers and takes a look at Russian workers' settlements.

FROM "TALKING ARCHITECTURE" TO MONUMENTAL PROPAGANDA: SYMBOLIC STRATA OF ST. PETERSBURG AND BUDAPEST, LATE 19TH - MID 20TH CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (80) December, 2022

On the example of Budapest and St. Petersburg in the late XIX - XX centuries. the role of "speaking" architecture in the formation of the national spirit is considered. The heroic architectural landscape of St. Petersburg, imbued with a warlike spirit, is opposed to the bourgeois Budapest, whose “talking architecture” is overflowing with symbols of abundance and fertility. The prerequisites that influenced the development of the Magyar revival are revealed: Catholic baroque, reformist architecture, Masonic tradition, folklore motifs.

ON STUDIES OF ARCHITECTURAL ORIENTALISM IN RUSSIA AND HUNGARY, (MID 19th - EARLY 20th CENTURY)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (77) March, 2022

European representations of the East have been studied. A hypothesis is suggested that the construct "East" consisted of three parts: Islamic East, Buddhist East, and India. The evolution of Orientalism is considered in the context of the European colonial policy in the second half of the 19th century. The bulk of the article is devoted to the exhibition architecture of 1867-1900. Examples of Orientalism in Russia and Hungary are reviewed

THE "VERNACULAR" AND THE "NATIONAL" IN THE CULTURAL LANDSCAPES OF ENLIGHTENMENT AND ART NOUVEAU, MID 19th - EARLY 20th CENTURY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (76) December, 2021

The article deals with the construction of the "vernacular" and the "national" in the Russian architecture of the 19th - early 20th century. A brief overview of the sources on the topic is given, new materials from the funds of the Russian State Historical Archive in St. Petersburg are introduced, and less obvious directions in the "legalization of the vernacular" in the cultural landscape of the Enlightenment are proposed for discussion. The stages of the “Russian court revival” from “Russian” as “exotic” (along with “Chinese”) to “Russian” as “national” are reviewed.

REPRESENTATIONS OF THE EMPIRE AND THE ARCHITECTURAL IMAGE OF THE HOMELAND: PACIFIC RUSSIA AND RUSSIAN TURKESTAN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (74) June, 2021

The focus of the article is on the representations of the Russian Empire in the New Lands (the Far East and Turkestan) which became part of the Republic of Ingushetia at the same time in the late 19th - early 20th century, and the mirror problem of constructing a convincing image of the East for the residents of the metropolis. The emergence of Orientalism, "Russian style" and "frontier architecture" is considered. The conclusion is made that the cultural policy of Russian colonialism was variable.

SAKHALIN’S CULTURAL LANDSCAPES: THE VERNACULAR AND THE NATIONAL

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (69) March, 2020

Sakhalin is a unique cultural space that has experienced a twofold change of identity (from Russian to Japanese and back) over several decades. As such, the territory remains largely unexplored. The author, based on recent expeditions and little known (outside the Far East) sources offers a panoramic overview of local "vernacular" architecture, its development and transformation over the last century and a half, with special attention to the inclusion of the Japanese period in Sakhalin's "cultural code". The main conclusion is that the region's contemporary architecture continues to reflect both Russian pre-revolutionary and Japanese influence.
