THE ROLE OF «MODEL» HOUSING DESIGNS IN THE ARCHITECTURAL CREATIVITY OF MIKHAIL PAVLOVICH MALAKHOV

The article considers the architectural features of the residential buildings designed by the Ural architect Mikhail Malakhov in Ekaterinburg in the first half of the 19th century using ‘model’ façade schemes. M.Malakhov’s architectural and spatial planning solutions are presented and the stylistic regularities and façade detailing techniques are described, The creative method of M.P.Malakhov is considered in the context of the Russia-wide practice of housing construction during the era of Classicism.

THE CITY PLANNING ACTIVITIES OF THE ARCHITECT MIKHAIL P. MALAKHOV

The article considers the town-planning activities of Mikhail Pavlovich Malakhov, a well-known architect who worked in the Urals in the first half of the 19th century. He developed the 1829 and 1845 master plans for Yekaterinburg and the first regular plans for the factory settlements Elizavet and Gorny Shchit. The authors describe the historical background and the trends in national and regional planning practice in the late 18th-early 19th century which influenced the development town plans in general. M.P.Malakhov’s proposals for the master plans and his Classicist principles of «regularity» embodied in the construction and improvements of the Ural mining settlements are considered. The typological and compositional features of M. P. Malakhov's regular plans are identified in the context of national urban planning practice during the Classicist period
