THE EVOLUTION OF SETTLEMENTS IN THE CARBON INDUSTRY (ON THE EXAMPLE OF LENINSK-KUZNETSK)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (64) December, 2018

In the context of socio-economic transformations and re-industrialization and, thus, the urgent need to improve urban environments, single-industry cities within the extractive sector (gas, oil, coal) are facing the greatest problems. The current trends in this sector indicate re-orientation towards shale oil production and abandonment of conventional sources of fuel. The coal mining industry is still in demand, but it requires significant improvements, first of all, in technologies. Most of the coal-mining enterprises (mines of various types, concentrating plants) in the Russian Federation are located in KUZBASS area. During the Industrialization and throughout the 20th century, this area experienced extensive construction of cities to meet the needs of the developing industry. The special aspects of their transformation (or evolution) are important for understanding the further development of a mono-industry city with a population of up to 100 thousand residents.
