TRADITIONAL ORNAMENTS OF THE FAR NORTH AS A SPECIAL AESTHETIC VALUE WITHIN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN CULTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (64) December, 2018

The article deals with the phenomenon of traditional ornament in the indigenous peoples of the Russian North. The author considers not only the decorative qualities but also the social and humanitarian ones. The combination of these qualities, as the author argues, constitutes the very essence of a nomadic way of living, including local technologies and practices of adaptation/survival in the extreme environment.
The article contains an analysis of the mythological mindset of indigenous people and systematizes methods and approaches to studying traditional symbolic culture and ornamental art. As a result, the ornament is interpreted as an integral component of «peculiar northern aesthetics» and, more broadly, «the raw material for the future.» In conclusion, the author presents her vision of a targeted/regional approach to modern design practice.
