GALLERY OF THE MOSCOW GOLDSMITHS OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH– EARLY 20TH CENTURIES: I. D. CHICHELEV

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (64) December, 2018

The article is devoted to one of the famous Moscow jewelry companies that worked in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century and belonged to Ivan Chichelev. Modern Russian art studies have not yet been concerned with this jewelry factory, although it was mentioned in periodicals and reports from international and national expos along with the well-known jewelers of that time: Ovchinnikov, Khlebnikov, Postnikov. Based on archival documents and periodicals from the 19th – early 20th century and using literary-analytical, cultural and historical research methods, the history of the factory is presented for the first time, its exhibition activities are shown, and the stylistic features of the jewelry produced at the factory are highlighted. The article touches upon the important problem of interaction between manufacturers and professional artists. For the first time, documents confirming the relationship between the company and the Stroganov Imperial School are made available for the interested researchers. I.D. Chichelev’s firm in Moscow was one of the few involved in important commissions for religious utensils and in restoration work in the Armory. The article and related material, used in museum cataloguing, may be of interest to researchers studying Moscow late 19th– early 20th century jewelry art.
