BIONIC ASPECTS IN THE CREATIVITY OF SANTIAGO CALATRAVA
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (57) March, 2017
The article is devoted to the «bionic» aspects in the works of the well-known Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava (born in 1951) and his design consultancy «Santiago Calatrava’s Design». Analysis involves some of his realised projects, such the airport buildings in Bilbao (Spain), the railway station in Lisbon (Portugal), residential tower in Malmo (Sweden), the Olympic sports complex in Athens (Greece), Milwaukee Art Museum (USA), City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia (Spain). The main emphasis is made on most striking natural "imitations" reproduced in master plans, in architectural compositions and engineering solutions of all these buildings. An attempt is made to identify the historical roots of S.Calatrava’s creative style and his place in the classification of modern architectural styles.

ARCHITECTURAL AND TOWN-PLANNING ASPECTS IN THE WORK OF GAIUS JULIUS CAESAR «COMMENTARIES ON THE GALLIC WAR»
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (53) March, 2016
The article is devoted to the basic professional activities of ancient Roman engineers and architects in the 1st century BC. These aspects are described in sufficient detail in Julius Caesar’s “Commentaries on the Gallic War”, which considers the main principles underlying the development of fortification systems in cities and military camps, structural treatment of bridges and temporary crossings, and principal types of siege equipment and defense barriers. It is shown that one of the reasons why the barbarian tribes were defeated in this war was the superiority of the Roman army not only in structural organisation and arms but also in architectural technology.
