APPROACHES TO EXPRESSING THE PHENOMENON OF MEMORY IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (73) March, 2021

The article investigates approaches to the phenomenon of memory in 21st century architecture. Transmission of memory has been evident in architectural projects throughout history. In the theoretical and practical works of 20th century architects, we can see conceptualizations of the phenomenon of memory as part of modern form building. Postmodern architecture formulated ways of expressing memory, which were then developed further in contemporary architecture. The article discusses examples of objects that demonstrate memory materialization in latest architecture. We suggest three approaches involving different ways of expressing memories. It is concluded that each approach has its own specific compositional and artistic techniques of expression.

NEW ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTS FOR STUDYING AND INTERPRETING MEMORY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (72) December, 2020

The article investigates a new typology of architectural projects that helps reveal the memory of a place and promote the cohesion of local communities as keepers of collective memory, with particular reference to visitor centers and interpretation centers. Fives cases are reviewed to delve into the interpretation of such components of a particular place as community, historical event, architectural heritage, nature and memory itself. Approaches to memory translation in the architecture of these buildings are identified. The conclusions sum up the characteristic features of their spatial and formal organization.

MEMORY AND PERMANENCE: EXAMPLES OF URBAN LOCI IN THE STRUCTURE OF A CONTEMPORARY EUROPEAN CITY

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (70) June, 2020

There is a growing need for ensuring continuity and sustainability in urban development. This calls for finding stable points of reference and rationales for such development. The article discusses eight examples of urban loci as places of spatial and temporal permanence in the structure of contemporary European cities that emerged in different historical periods, from antiquity to the present day. The result of the evolutionary analysis and review of the structure of objects and places is conclusions concerning the characteristic features of their functional and spatial organization.

MODELS FOR DESCRIBING A CITY IN THE CONTEXT OF HISTORICAL EVOLUTION

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (60) December, 2017

The growing complexity of the cities calls for descriptive models which could be used in research and design. Descriptive models are based on articulation of separate layers which make up the urban structure. City images on historical maps are analyzed. Six basic ways to represent a city developed by the beginning of the 20th century are identified. Modern research approaches and design concepts are examined and presented as graphic models. Relationships are established between historical representations and modern city description models.
