INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES IN URBAN REHABILITATION TO ENSURE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF DEPRESSED RESIDENTIAL AREAS

The article is devoted to the problem of improvement of residential areas. Gradual urban degradation can lead to the emergence of slums, which exist in many cities around the world. Such areas are characterized by a low-quality living environment. The problem of slums is compounded by the process of globalization, one of the reasons being the increasing intensity of the migration processes, particularly in metropolitan areas. As a result, the management of urban growth and consumer qualities of the environment is becoming more difficult. One of the essential conditions for ensuring sustainable urban development is elimination and prevention of slums. The author reviews theoretical and practical experiences, systematizes methods to improve the quality of degraded environments, and considers examples of successful rehabilitation of depressed residential areas in some countries (United Kingdom, Germany, etc.).

ECO-VILLAGES AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT SETTLEMENTS AS EXAMPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

This article considers issues of improving the environment of urbanized areas in the context of sustainable development. The author reviews and analyzes the theory and practical experiences of eco-village construction. Differences have been identified in relation to the motives behind their establishment, their classification, typology and urban planning principles in Russia and abroad. An attempt is made to prove that eco-villages must be established on the basis of eco-oriented "road maps" with the participation of architects. One of the most burning issues is the introduction of modern "green" technologies, which were successfully used in the construction of energy-efficient settlements. It is concluded that it is essential to integrate the qualitative characteristics of the two types of urban planning solutions for sustainable development.
