ISSUES IN TYPIFICATION OF HOUSING CONSTRUCTION IN WESTERN SIBERIA IN THE 1920s

Based on a study of archival documents and literary sources, the article examines the causes behind the housing shortage problem in Western Siberia in the 1920s. The technical conditions and quality characteristics of the various types of housing are assessed. The socio-economic problems of the region’s construction industry and actions taken to resolve them are analysed. The housing policies of the state and the housing construction aspirations of the local authorities are reviewed. The principles of housing construction typification and standardization in the region are considered on the basis of specific examples.

DESIGN OF HOUSING OF A NEW TYPE, SOCIALIST TOWN, IN WESTERN SIBERIA DURING THE FIRST FIVE-YEAR PERIOD

The article identifies the typology and functional organization of housing of a new type designed for the cities and towns of Western Siberia during the first five-year period. Analysis involves housing combine projects and spatial, structural and planning features of residential buildings. The critical responses of the professional community and the directives of authorities of different levels concerning housing construction in the socialist towns of the region are reviewed. Much attention is paid to the activity of Ernst May in Western Siberia, who made a huge contribution to the realization of the idea of ‘socialist town’ and to the designing of housing of a new type in the USSR. The approach of this German expert to the solution of town-planning, engineering, social and economic tasks is analyzed. The positive and negative sides of the residential architecture of the socialist towns considered are revealed.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN OF RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN WESTERN SIBERIA IN 1945 - 1955

This article examines the objectives of post-war residential housing design in Western Siberia and ownership of these objectives by the professional community. The effects of economic requirements on the architectural and aesthetic qualities of residential construction in the cities of the region are demonstrated. Based on a review of critical comments from colleagues and tenants of new residential buildings, the author identifies positive and negative aspects in the use of «Stalin Empire» stylistic methods in the residential architecture of the Western Siberian cities by local architects and examines the views of architects on their own creativity after the publication of the well-known resolutions of the mid-1950s and the opinions of professionals concerning the techniques of residential development in the region in connection with transition to industrial mass housing construction.

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENTS IN WESTERN SIBERIAN CITIES DURING THE POST-WAR DECADE

The article considers residential planning and development in Western Siberian cities during 1945 - 1955. The author reviews the impact of socioeconomic factors on residential development in the region. The methodology of the study is based on comprehensive analysis of documents from the state archive and museum, as well as from periodicals, literature, and Internet resources. The study has enabled the author to reveal reasons behind the emergence of various types of residential buildings in the region during that period, to identify objectives for residential development and solutions to them in urban contexts, and to review the implementation of the main provisions of the General Plans and residential development practices in Western Siberia. The results may be useful in preparing lecture courses on the history of architecture of the Soviet period and may provide a basis for further research.

The article considers housing construction in Western Siberia during the first half of the 1940s. Based on comprehensive analysis of archival materials, documentary sources, design developments, periodicals and field survey data, the author identifies the typology, spatial planning, structural and stylistic solutions. Per capita housing standards during the war are presented. The main urban planning problems of the region towards the end of the war are identified. The study elucidates the character and reasons behind the emergence of this typology and its influence on the plans of Western Siberian cities during the wartime.

В статье рассматривается влияние идей переустройства быта на создание новых типов жилища в крупнейшем административном, торговом и промышленном центре Сибири – городе Новосибирске – в период первой пятилетки. Анализируются концепции жилища нового типа, воплотившиеся в архитектуре города как в отдельных зданиях (дома-коммуны, дома переходного типа), так и квартальных жилых комплексах («сад-квартал», жилые комбинаты).
