THE EMERGENCE OF MEDITERRANEAN INSULAR ARCHITECTURE IN RETROSPECT. Part IV. MATURE AND LATE NEOLITHIC IN MALTA. Conclusion

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (50) June, 2015

The concluding article of this series considers mature and late Neolithic on Malta revealing the distinguishing features of Malta's temples of the above period based on the examples of Hagar Qim, Tarxien and Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni. These monuments mark a turn in construction and architecture, the beginnings of artistic comprehension of the surrounding world by means of decoration art represented by bas-reliefs. Special attention is given to Hypogeum, a multifunctional building, which was used as a sanctuary, temple and a centre for educating pristesses. The study suggests that Malta with its temples was the religious center of the Mediterranean.
