THE SYMBOLIC-SPIRITUALISTIC LINE IN THE PAINTINGS OF MAURICE DENIS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (67)

The article presents a cultural analysis of the paintings by Maurice Denis (1870-1943) created at the turn of the 20th century. His creativity is used as an example for retracing the main stages in the emergence of symbolism as an independent movement in fine art. The study draws parallels with other areas of culture for the purpose of revealing the historical and philosophical aspects of the Modernist style. The creativity of Maurice Denis, a brilliant representative of his time, suits best for pursuing our goals considering that besides easel and monumental paintings we are familiar with the scholarly works of this artist on theory of painting and art in general, which enables us to understand how this master viewed the world.
