THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE EARLY 20th CENTURY MENTAL HEALTH HOSPITAL IN TOMSK

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (51) September, 2015

The article considers the architecture and plan of the mental health hospital in Tomsk, its design and construction history and chronology. This complex is compared with similar structures of imperial Russia dating to the late 19th – early 20th century, in particular with a similar mental health hospital in Vinnitsa. The contributions of various architects, including local ones, into this project are defined. The study is the first of its kind to comprehensively examine the architecture and plan of a major late 19th – early 20th century Siberian medical complex of buildings. The study involved classification and analysis of pre-revolutionary and modern-day sources – written, graphic, archival and textual, as well as the results of field studies.
