THE EVOLUTION OF «SACRAL AREAS» IN SLAVIC CULT BUILDING TRADITION

The article expounds principal historical preconditions for the creation of sacral spaces. Based on historical and architectural analysis of world beliefs and symbols, the author identifies specific features pertaining to the organisation of a cult space with the Slavs and subsequent traditions of Orthodox town planning, which are distinct from the Catholic world. The author argues that in creating a city environment it is essential to take into account not only the general trends of urban planning evolution but also the archetypal Russian traditions of sacral space arrangement.
