THE PLANNING CONCEPTS OF THE 1939 AND 1953 PROJECTS FOR THE CENTRAL AREA OF YAKUTSK. IDEAS AND RESULTS

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (52) December, 2015

The article presents the first ever evaluation of the projects for the central ensemble of the city of Yakutsk developed by Leningrad Design Institutes in "Stalin's Empire" style. The author highlights problems in the development of an urban concept for Yakutsk in the context of the architectural and artistic crisis that took place in the USSR in 1930-1950s. Material for the study was provided by sketches and drawings kept in the collections of the Central State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation in St. Petersburg. Analysis covers project ideas, the extent to which they fit in with the landscape of the Tuimaada valley, and the professional expertise of the Leningrad architects involved in the project in relation to the practical problems facing the builders of Yakutsk, and identifies causes that prevented full implementation of the project ideas.
