THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES OF THE CONTEXTUAL DESIGN METHOD

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (45) March, 2014

The article is dedicated to the theoretical principles of the contextual design method, which demonstrates the design process as gradual blending of project and context. The contextual design method implies a multistage design process with alternating immersion of the creative concept into the context and extraction out of it. With every next immersion, the concept acquires more properties from the context and gradually blends with it. The theoretical basis of the method is provided by the «Atlas of Novel Tectonics», a study of the American architects J. Reiser and N. Umemoto around the terms «diagram» and «matter» positioning the contextual approach; the theory of «The Fold» by Gilles Deleuze in a concept of nonlinear architecture and form- generation methods of landform architecture. In the method of contextual design, the principal provisions of the underlying theories have received a conceptual interpretation of interaction that is based on the idea of context as the main form-generating factor.
