ANTIQUE PLASTIC MOTIVES IN RUSSIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD: ARCHAEOLOGY SOURCES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (46) June, 2014

The subject-matter of this study is antique plastic forms that were used in Russian arts and crafts in the last quarter of the 18th century and early 19th century. The most popular of these became steel masks, bukranii, heads of lions and satyrs, floral motifs and trophies. Antiquity was inspired by images of the eagles in the Russian throne, dolphins, sphinxes and caryatids in furniture, cupids and naiads in the decoration of vases. The aim of the study is to show the invaluable contribution to the design and manufacture of porcelain and stone vases, furniture, and lighting fixtures by the sculptors N.-F. Gillet and J.-D. Rachette, jeweler I. Buch , specialists in bronze I. Tseh and P.-M.-L. Aji, furniture masters J.-B. Charlemagne, H. Meyer, P. Spole, T. Bonaveri, architects Ch. Cameron , G. Quarenghi, N.A. Lvov, V. Brenna , A.N. Voronikhin, etc. The scientific novelty of this study is an original methodology of antique form sourcing based on a search in Western European engraved publications on classical archeology and arts and crafts.
