THE USE OF WOODEN STRUCTURES IN TRANSFORMABLE SPORTS FACILITIES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (41) March, 2013

Wood started to be extensively used in sports facilities in Russia in the 1930s, later followed by Europe. Buildings of that period feature expressive plastic forms and surfaces of elements. The architectural form of sports facilities depends on the structural scheme, i.e. the form of the building should meet a range of criteria. The large variety of structural solutions applied today open up broad opportunities for architects and engineers in designing sports facilities. The use of wooden structures in the construction of sports arenas has become popular due to many factors. Wooden structures create a beneficial microclimate indoors and improve technologies used for roof transformation in sports facilities. The wooden structure transformation system allows one to determine the layout and functioning of the building’s space. The use of lighter wooden structures in sports facilities makes the transformation of roofs easier. Wood is useful in large-span structures both individually and in combination with other materials; allowing large spans to be covered without excessive loads and reducing cost. In Russia, the use of wooden structures will allow transformation technologies to be used in sports facilities to meet both design and operation needs.
