SUMMER EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING PRACTICE AND ITS VALUE FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENTS
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (40) December, 2012
Training of professionals for graphic design, which is penetrating into all possible spheres of social life, has a variety of specific features. These features define training means and methods applicable to this speciality in the context of various disciplines.
The author considers the objectives of en plein air practice for graphic design students, consisting in the mastering of the main principles underlying the organisation of artistic space and decorative treatment of natural and vegetative forms.
The article reviews in detail the process of creating a series of graphic sheets and variants of its arrangement.
The study proposes a well-piloted method for strengthening skills in academic disciplines (drawing, painting).
Also, the article draws interdisciplinary links with design disciplines, specifically to concrete assignments in the discipline "Ornament" and the ecological poster design assignment in the discipline «Graphic Design». Experience gained in the course of en plein air practice is considered as providing potential for basing one’s work with regard to ornamental composition and poster assignments on a profound study of the natural environment and an understanding of surrounding space and fine relations between the individual and the natural space rather on formal techniques and principles.
The work carried out by the author demonstrates a methodological approach to educating a creative individuality by developing emotional perception and thinking in images, as well by enriching students’ language of imagery and plasticity.
