ARCHITECTURAL "RESTORATION" IN THE 18TH CENTURY OTTOMAN EMPIRE: RENOVATION OF FATIH AND EYUP MOSQ
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (68) December, 2019
The mosques of Eyup and Fatih were the first cult buildings of Istanbul erected under Sultan’s patronage. They played a crucial role in the ritual and political life of the Ottoman Empire. The rebuilding of these mosques after the 1766 earthquake ruled out Baroque architectural experiments, requiring from the architects to expand the search for patterns of stylization conforming to the "Ottoman classics". Despite the departure from the originals, the results of the late 18th century liberal "restoration" satisfied the customer and the Muslim community; moreover, they were perceived as historic buildings for following the already archaic type of the "Great Ottoman Mosque".
