Light and color as tools of pedestrian navigation in the urban environment under the influence of climatic factors (the case of Novosibirsk)
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (91) September, 2025
This publication continues the research work entitled «Hierarchy of Color-Light Contrasts in the Urban Navigation System» and focuses on identifying the features of landmark perception under the influence of climatic factors. The spatial organization of the contemporary city — characterized by a high level of visual saturation, complex morphology, and functional layering — becomes especially sensitive to a decline in navigation efficiency under the influence of natural and climatic conditions. In situations of reduced visibility caused by atmospheric precipitation, fog, or diurnal light dynamics, traditional graphic navigation elements lose their informativeness and perceptual accessibility.
The article proposes a conceptual scheme of color-light navigation in the context of natural and climatic influences. Theoretical assumptions are illustrated by the example of Novosibirsk — a large Siberian metropolis with a sharply continental climate, marked by a wide range of weather conditions, abundant precipitation, prolonged frosts, and short daylight hours — making it a suitable model for assessing the navigational potential of the urban environment under climatic constraints.

Hierarchy of color and light contrasts in the city wayfinding system
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (88) December, 2024
The publication discusses way finding (using the example of Novosibirsk) in an urban environment at different times of the day. In order to plan a route and find the necessary location, a pedestrian needs to analyze the surrounding space, memorize environmental objects and determine their features. In this work, we seek to identify the navigational potential of environmental objects and build hierarchical relationships using systematization and generalization methods between the elements of the composition within the view frame of the visual space. The study suggests that the most significant accents of the urban environment are color and light as the main orientation tools for tourists and visitors of the city.

PARTICULAR ISSUES IN PRE-DESIGN ANALYSIS OF NOVOSIBIRSK’S LIGHT AND COLOR ENVIRONMENT
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (68) December, 2019
The article considers an integrated approach to the design of the light & color urban environment of Novosibirsk. This study is timely because in contrast to the tectonic daytime image of the urban environment, its evening image can be dynamic and decorative to a varying degree, which allows the designer to embody the most daring ideas. Most often, designers strive to create a welcoming and recognizable living space regardless of the time of the day; however, methods for designing the light & color environment of a city will differ significantly depending on its climatic conditions, local culture and urban plan. Given the current trends in the light & color treatment of urban environments, we propose further details to the designing of the light & color environment for a Siberian city using Novosibirsk as an example.
