THE EVOLUTION OF RATIONAL FORMS IN THE WOODEN ARCHITECTURE OF SUBERIA

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №4 (60) December, 2017

The article discusses the evolution of wooden architecture in one of the provincial cities of Western Siberia in the early 20th century. The concept of "rationalism" characteristic of stone and wooden architecture is defined. Attention is paid to the construction both of private and for-profit houses and of public buildings, and their characteristic features are highlighted. The reasons for addressing this theme are: 1. Extensive construction of wooden buildings of all types in Siberia. 2. Research into the second half of 19th – early 20th century wooden architecture of Tomsk suggests that over that period of time wooden architecture was designed and erected by professionals: architects and civil engineers. 3. During the periods of Eclecticism and Art Nouveau, these stylistic features appeared not only in stone but also in wooden houses. The author concludes that the term "rationalism" is applicable to wooden architecture as well. This theme is raised in press for the first time and is subject to discussion.

«NORTHERN ART NOUVEAU» IN THE INTERPRETATIONS OF WOODEN HOUSES IN THE CITY OF TOMSK

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (59) September, 2017

This study of Western Siberian wooden architecture suggests a fairly significant influence of stone architecture on it and identifies its style. The abundance of wood in Siberia prompted the 19th – early 20th century architects to design various types of houses from this easily available material. The article defines the concept of "Northern Art Nouveau» and outlines views on one of the movements in the early 20th century architecture. The author provides evidence that in Siberian cities, Tomsk in particular, this style was widely used in designing public and private buildings.

CLASSICAL TENDENCIES IN THE WOODEN BUILDINGS OF WESTERN SIBERIAN CITIES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (57) March, 2017

The article reviews the planning and development of provincial cities in Siberia. From the 18th century, elevation series were designed for public buildings, and the process of "type and replication building» started with the emergence of a new direction in local architecture, "Classicism". Classicism in Siberia was associated with Catherine II (1762–1796) reforms which served as a reason and basis for the development of Classicism in the architecture of St.-Petersburg and Moscow. Those transformations directly affected Western Siberia as well, where both stone and wooden buildings were constructed based on type designs. The article focuses mainly on wooden "Empire" houses.
