A TYPOLOGY OF PLANNING COMPOSITIONS IN THE HISTORICAL CENTER OF SAINT-PETERSBURG

The planning structure of Saint Petersburg’s historical center has been analyzed, revealing numerous planning compositions of various scales. These demonstrate an ensemble character and principles and techniques of arranging into whole objects. An attempt is made to systematize the compositions into seven typological groups. It is suggested that the compositions could be arranged in a hierarchy reflecting the planning and compositional complexity of Saint Petersburg’s central area.
