BIOMIMETIC PRINCIPLES IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (74) June, 2021

The article outlines the main concepts of biomimetic architecture and considers the influence of the biomimetic approach on architectural activity based on a review of domestic and foreign design experiences. The basic principles of biomimetics that can be used to create a harmonious architectural and natural environment are examined. The relevance of biomimetic principles is determined by a number of challenges that are facing an architect today as the complexity of objects to be designed increases and the focus of attention shifts to environmental and socio-economic factors. The biomimetic principles considered are based on the emulation of nature and are associated with the evolutionary biological model of living organisms that is responsible for their viability. The implementation of these principles increases the durability and sustainability of architectural objects while enabling architectural environments to acquire a distinctive and unique look.

RECENT TRENDS IN THE ARCHITECTURAL TREATMENT OF TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS COMPLEXES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (38) June, 2012

At present, little attention is given to the architectural expressiveness of transport and logistics facilities or to their effect on the urban environment in domestic architectural practice and building. Moreover, most of the existing logistical centres fail to meet modern-day requirements not only in terms of their architectural and spatial planning treatment but also functionally. This article is devoted to advanced tendencies in the design and building of logistical centres.

A logistical centre presents a complex system of a large number of functionally diverse facilities that are interconnected with each other and with the environment, forming a fairly sophisticated structure. It has now become a common practice to use information technologies for modelling processes within a logistical centre and for predicting its performance. However, the methods used are mainly concerned with process management, ignoring the unique character of the local context or contemporary tendencies in form, etc.

In this article, the author makes an attempt to identify recent tendencies in the design and building of logistical facilities based on a review of existing projects, design proposals, novel technologies in logistics and how these are taken into account in architectural, spatial planning and design solutions. In the review, all logistical facilities are divided into 3 classes according to service level: local logistical facilities within city boundaries, regional and major international centres. Each class is analyzed comprehensively in order to see how flexible warehousing buildings and complexes can be in terms of architecture, spatial planning, composition and layout.

The review and analysis have enabled us to identify the following main tendencies in the design and building of transport and logistics facilities: usage of unusual architectural forms, complex infrastructure with a social function, extensive improvements, modularity, vertical development, and autonomous building services.
