ON THE ISSUE OF THE PHENOMENON OF DESIGN IN RUSSIA

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (39) September, 2012

The article is devoted to the adaptation of the phenomenon of design as a «western product» to Russian mentality. The author examines the origins of design in the West and in Russia and identifies the fundamental features of domestic and western design that are determined by relevant values and attitudes (using the historical genetic and historical comparative research methods, and philosophical axiological analysis).

Domestic design is characterized by a higher degree of canonicity in comparison with the West; scientism and a high level of reflexivity; it is to become a conductor of cultural values, and as such it is extremely antinomic. The state should play a major role in the development of Russian design, being a guarantor of values conveyed through the form but also ensuring that design reaches the level of mass consumption. Domestic design provides a framework within which the Russian aesthetic tradition, oriented to complex form and metaphoric language, is being reconsidered.

PRAGMATIC AESTHETIC FEATURES IN THE SPATIAL ENVIRONMENT OF PETER ZUMTHOR

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (35) September, 2011

The late 20th– early 21st century is characterised by the pragmatisation of design thinking: attention is focused on the inner world of the individual, and beauty is regarded from the point of view of its impact on the consumer. We can identify several stages in the history of pragmatic aesthetics:
1.Ascetic pragmatism (Protestantism, 16th century): - functional form; - universal form; - simple form, emphasis on internal meanings.
2.Instrumental pragmatism (American pragmatism, late 19th century): - emotional "form/shell"; - convenience.
3.Interpreting pragmatism (German pragmatic philosophy, second half of the 20th century): - contextuality (form as a result of interpretation of the reality).

Features of pragmatic aesthetics are obvious in P.Zumthor’s projects of different years: in St. Benedict Chapel (1989) and Therme Vals (1996) in Switzerland, Kolumba museum (2007) and Bruder Klaus Kapelle (2007) in Germany. P.Zumthor acts in the role of philosopher/creator; his projects keep memory of the history of the place and encourage the spectator to produce his/her own interpretations, celebrating an impostulable eco-friendliness.

GENESIS OF RATIONALISTIC MODELS OF THE TANGIBLE ENVIRONMENT

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (25) March, 2009

This work is an attempt to reveal regularities in the emergence of rationalistic models of the tangible environment and the effect of these models on modern-day environmental design. The article considers briefly the development of modern-day environmental design from the point of view of genesis of rationalistic models.
