ARCHITECTURAL AND CIVIL ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS FOR PREMISES AND SPACES CONCERNING MUSIC PERFORMANCE DURING FUNERAL CEREMONIES

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (34) June, 2011

The article describes issues in the design and construction of buildings in funeral business for performing ceremonies with music. The use of live music or soundtracks sets special requirements concerning the design of ceremonial premises and spaces. Currently, there are no adequate quality guidelines that would ensure competent designing of such projects allowing for the needs of all categories of music consumers. For people with physical disabilities and mobility impairments, participation in ceremonial rites is especially difficult in existing conditions as the environment for such users is not barrier-free and there is no relevant auxiliary equipment inside and around such buildings.

This study rests on existing federal laws and standards. For new architectural projects to be convenient, functional and safe, the author has formulated architectural planning requirements for funeral halls and for ceremonial and auxiliary premises and spaces and for their layout and preparation for holding services with music. This set of proposals includes functional, planning, acoustic and microclimatic requirements, as well as requirements as to building services and relevant supporting recommendations.

The requirements cover such issues as transportation of large-sized musical instruments, organisation of workplaces for musicians, mix of premises and functional zones, provision of comfortable and safe microclimatic conditions, acoustics and sound insulation, and the availability and layout of special and engineering equipment.

The proposals put forward in the article present a package of architectural planning requirements for premises and spaces with regard to the musical accompaniment of mournful events. The same requirements may be regarded as relevant for architectural projects intended for hosting events with music.
