THE "TENET" HOTEL. AN ARCHITECTURAL "DIALOGUE" OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №2 (58) June, 2017

Extensive development of the city and densification of its central areas has led to the fact that contemporary buildings are erected in historically valuable sites and co-exist with cultural heritage. In case of inadequate approach to design, such superposition of historical layers can destroy the established general picture of the city. The situation obliges architects to apply specific design approaches enabling harmony to be achieved between the present and the historical heritage of the city. The article reviews the "Tenet" hotel located in, Lenin Prospekt, the oldest central street of Ekaterinburg. This object placed in the context of a historical site is one of the most indicative and successful examples of coexistence of modern architecture and the built environment. Postmodernist techniques in the front elevation in combination with the spatial treatment of the building have allowed the hotel to become a continuation, a modern-day replica of the mansion that belonged to the merchants Izhboldin. This example of care can be regarded as exemplary and serve as a reference point for similar situations where interaction between the next generation architecture and historical heritage is at issue.
