CLASSIFICATION OF THE EARLY 20th CENTURY FORTIFICATION STRUCTURES ON THE GULF OF FINLAND COAST
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (35) September, 2011
The article presents a classification of fortification structures on the Gulf of Finland coast. The system of coastal fortifications presents separate but interrelated groups of fortification structures dispersed across the island. In the early 20th century, the system of fortifications consisted of a set of trenches and communications, supplemented with open and covered weapon emplacements of all types, command facilities, and shelters for personnel and machinery. The defence works within the coastal fortifications possessed similar functions and regional features. These features were the result of a complex influence of geopolitical, natural terrain, planning, socio-economic and fortification engineering factors. These factors defined the architectural and planning structure of the coastal fortifications.
