ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF VEHICLE DESIGN IN UDMURT REPUBLIC

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №3 (35) September, 2011

The article identifies stages in the development of vehicle design in the Udmurt Republic matched by a typology of vehicle models at each stage and describes car and motorcycle design solutions at each historical stage.

Pre-war period. The design of vehicles was constrained by the technological and economic potentialities of the factory.

Post-war period. The motorcycle exteriors were defined by the 1930-1940 fashion characterized by aviation references, which manifested themselves in general streamlined shapes, drop-shaped petrol tank and spindle-shaped silencer with vertical terminations reminding of a rocket tail.

The special design bureau activity and car factory construction stage. The car design solutions were in accordance with the laconic architectural forms of the 1960s.

The Izhmash integrated design office stage. The car images of that period feature sports lines with a dynamic character of the window-sill lines, inclined front plane of the headlights and radiator lining, expanded wheel arches, and a bright and contrasting colour treatment.

The stylistic solutions of the motorcycles were based on geometric forms with shallow curvatures, with lines flowing from one shape into another. For the purpose of expanding the range of products, designers proposed a number of motor-cars based on motorcycle components but having automobile arrangements.

The article identifies trends in the development of vehicle design allowing for certain regional factors and the influence of external and internal factors on the design solutions of cars and motorcycles.
