A FIELD STUDY OF THE TYPES OF HOUSING CONSTRUCTION AND RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT IN NAJAF (IRAQ)
Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (69) March, 2020
The article presents the results of a field study of the residential architectural environment in the city of Najaf (Iraq) to identify the common types of housing construciton in it. The city suffers from problems associated with a lack of adequate decent housing and mismatch between the available housing and the preferences of the residents. Economic considerations are the most significant factor in determining what housing models are preferable and acceptable for the residents. However, the study has found that it is not only economic considerations but also improved functional characteristics that influence the choice of the best type of housing. By comparing two residential areas in Najaf and identifying preferred housing models, the study has showed that the dynamic principle of contemporary life is adaptation to new models and that functional improvements of any type of housing serve to optimize the residential architectural environment as a whole and improve life for its residents
