The monument to V.I. Lenin on the Amur Cliff in Khabarovsk (a hypothesis of authorship)

Architecton: Proceedings of Higher Education №1 (85) March, 2024

The article is devoted to the history of one of the monuments to V.I. Lenin in Khabarovsk. Based on a study of the recently discovered archive of the forgotten decorative artist M.A. Genendlis and analysis of historical photographs of Lenin monuments, a hypothesis of the authorship of the monument to V.I. Lenin on the Amur Cliff is proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first publication on the biography and sculptural works of M.A. Genendlis made by him during his residence in the Far East. These materials make it possible to preserve the memory and visual representation of the monument, which stood for about half a century on one of the most important historical sites in the territory of Khabarovsk.

The article revisits the architecture and design history of one of the significant cultural objects in the Far-Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur built in the early 1950s. Recently discovered documentary material has afforded a description of individual stucco moldings in the interiors of this building, which has almost fallen into neglect. The article also presents historical information and biographical details of one of its decorators, the Khabarovsk artist M.A.Genendlis. The photographs are courtesy of D.Yu. Nikolaev.
